Tony Stark Paint by AgentToni Tony Stark Paint by AgentToni
WELL, people have wanted to see some of my serious art for awhile now, and I've been working on this for over a month.

Realism is my weakness, and working with digital paint is even more of a weakness of mine. But I've been looking at tutorials, playing with textures and brushes, lighting, and PS's effect tools and this is the end result. I used a screencap as a reference for this.

I have to say I'm really pleased with it.

This is absolutely gorgeoous and powerful! I've been looking and combing over tutorials as well and I have to say I get overwhelmed with the amount of texture brushes PS has to offer, this is like an oil painting, i like how his skin pores contrast with the metallic armour! Skin pores is one of the hardest things to master in PS, I'm looking forward to see more work from you!

Thanks!

Oddly enough, I'm so much better with soft blending painting than harder painting like cel shading.

I just told Miranda how I did most of this, but a lot of texture brushes can indeed get confusing. I only used three different brushes for this. Speckled, soft edge and hard edge.

I just used many different pressures, opacities, and sizes.

Oh my friggin Gawd, welcome to my world, I find that whenever I try to cel shade, at the end, no matter how much I control myself, I tell myself, I'll just soften the edges a bit, with a bit of smudge, with a bit of pressure, then before I know it everything blends like a smoothie!

Ah yes, the speckled brush, I downloaded oodles of brushes but to be honest, not all them them suits me and I usually go back to the default ones.

Ah, I used the default ones for this. No special ones. Though they do have specific brushes for skin, I've noticed.

I also used the fresco filter on this when I was done. It added a tad bit more texture all around.

Woman! How did you do this! I must know!
I suck at realism and been wanting to try again but I could never find the right tools!
Tell me your secrets!

Oh! And after I was done painting everything, I wanted just a TAD more detail for the skin, so I put a fresco filter over it.

Lots and lots of time, patience and constantly using different textured brushes with different opacity.

I used speckled brushes set at 20% opacity for most the skin and just went over it over and over with different pressures until I was happy. Lots of blending. In some places I switched to a soft brush and upped the opacity to around 72% and used VERY light pressure to go back over the speckled.

Same with the armor. I used a soft brush for the intial shapes, added sharpness with a solid brush for the edging and details, then textured it with a speckle brush using different sizes and pressures.

Mostly it was a lot of trial and error, screaming, headaches, and grumbling. XP

And that's what I'm afraid of.

get so frustrated easily and I'm gonna end up breaking either my computer or my tablet and I don't want either of that but I still need to try!

I'll have to play around with everything first I guess, try to get used to it all.

Well, as I said, I worked on this for over a month. Little by little. If you try to sit down and do something like this all at once, you will get frustrated. Sometimes I sat there for 10 minutes, other times it was over an hour. But I always took breaks, watched more tutorials, and came back to work again.

And believe it or not, this is all one layer. With this kind of painting, it's easy to color over something you don't like and re-blend it in. Can't do that so easily with anime-style shading. So I didn't have to be so precise. And that's the key to realism. Real skin is full of flaws, so you want to use as many colors as possible and texture for the right look.
